7 Signs Your Website Needs a Redesign (Before You Lose More Customers)

If you're a local business owner, your website is often the very first impression someone gets of you — before they ever call, book, or walk through your door. And here's the thing: most business owners know something feels off about their site. They just aren't sure if it's "fix a few things" off, or "start over" off.

After years of working with local service businesses in the Crescenta Valley and beyond, I've found there are a handful of clear signs that tell you it's time for a redesign — not just a tweak. Here are seven of them.

1. It Was Built Before 2020

Web design — and more importantly, how Google evaluates websites — has changed a lot. If your site hasn't been touched in five-plus years, it's likely missing things that matter today: mobile responsiveness, fast loading speed, and a clear path for visitors to actually contact you. Think of it like a flip phone. It still technically works, but it's not doing what you need it to anymore.

2. It's Slow to Load

Here's a number that surprises most business owners: if your website takes longer than three seconds to load, a large chunk of visitors will leave before they even see it. Slow sites don't just frustrate people — they get penalized by Google too, which means fewer people find you in the first place.

3. It Doesn't Look Right on a Phone

More than half of all local searches happen on a phone. If your site was designed for a desktop screen and just "shrinks down" awkwardly on mobile — text too small, buttons hard to tap, images cut off — you're losing the majority of your potential customers before they even get a chance to learn about you.

4. There's No Clear Call to Action

Take a hard look at your homepage. Is it obvious what you want a visitor to do next? Call you? Book a consultation? Fill out a form? If someone has to hunt for how to reach you, they usually won't bother — they'll just move on to the next search result.

5. It Doesn't Reflect Who You Are Now

Businesses evolve. Maybe you've added new services, moved locations, or simply grown into a different kind of company than you were when the site was built. If your website still talks about who you used to be, it's not doing its job of representing who you are today.

6. You Can't Update It Yourself (or Are Afraid To)

If making a simple change to your website feels like a project — or you're relying on someone else for every little edit — that's a sign your site was built on outdated or overly complicated technology. A modern website should be something you can manage confidently, not something you're afraid to touch.

7. It's Not Showing Up in Search

This one's a big one. A website can look perfectly fine and still be nearly invisible on Google. If you search your own business and can't find your website easily, or your competitors consistently outrank you, your site's structure — not just its design — is likely part of the problem.

So, Does Your Website Need a Redesign?

If even two or three of these sound familiar, it's worth taking a closer look. A redesign doesn't have to mean starting from zero and it doesn't have to be overwhelming. It means building something that actually works for you — one that loads fast, looks great on every device, and helps the right customers find and choose you.
